Echoes

I felt the echoes of your pain last night
Beating against my heart
As if it were my very own
Your tears were drenching my soul
Your sobs wracking my insides
Words tumbled from my lips
Ramblings and promises
Anything and everything
My only thought, keep her going, keep her walking
Just a little further
Armed only with puzzles and snack food
I waited
A thousand miles away
Counting each breath over the phone
I waited
Home; you finally said
So I turned off the light
Sat in the dark and silence
And prayed
I prayed for your mind to be too muddled
Your bones to be heavy 
Prayed for sleep to take you
To kiss your tear stained cheeks
Tucking you in, wrapping its arms
Around you, as I would
Whispering no dreams tonight
